Back to hard
choices, but after a day of thinking about this I came up with...
Rock& Roll
Queen - The Subways
I adore this song;
I can dance to it, sing to it and basically scream it out and I don’t care, it
just puts me in a good mood!
It's a classic for me, I think I am the only one who feels this way, but I do believe the test of a good song is that you can listen to once a month for five years and still jump up and down and feel like it's the first time you heard it.
I couldn't
find any song facts about it but I did find a Wikipedia entry which states the
following:
"Rock & Roll Queen" is a single from
theBritishindie rockbandThe Subways, from
their debut recordYoung For Eternity. It was featured on the hit dramaThe OCand is
track 1 onMusic from the OC: Mix 5. It also features in British TV
advertisements forRimmel, the movieLive Free or Die Hard,
the 2008 German movieDie Welleas well
as appearing on the soundtracks of EA Sports gamesRugby 06andFIFA Street 2. In
2008, the song appeared in the video gamesSaints Row 2andPure. The song was
also used in the trailer and nightclub scene for the filmRocknRolla, in which they appear performing the
song. The single itself reached number 22 on the UK singles chart when released
on June 20, 2005.
I'll never
forget the first time I heard it; it was indeed on an episode of the OC. The
next day I went out and bought the CD first thing in the morning from Newbury
HMV. I do like all of the Subways music, it feels slightly "old school" and in
fact they have a new album out. They have gained a cult like status at the
Reading & Leeds festivals to the point where they are now Main Stage
regulars.
Unlike Day 1 this is an easy choice...
Everyone knows which song makes them violently turn off a radio.
For me it was a very easy choice, I
didn't really have to think about it and I'm so not going to "wax
lyrical" about it either. I don’t know why I dislike this song so much,
but it honestly puts my whole body in a state of stress. Maybe it’s the
overplayed factor? It’s more than likely the very silly lyrics?
This horrible song is
It's Raining
Men - The Weather Girls
Here are some song facts:
The Weather Girls were the duo of Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes, who were both
overweight and also recorded as Two Tons Of Fun. Wash, who had a very
powerful voice, sang on many projects over the next several years,
including songs by the groups C&C Music Factory ("Make You
Sweat") and Black Box ("Strike It Up"). She was often
uncredited and replaced in videos by models lip-synching her lines. She
eventually sued for royalties and released a solo album under her own
name. Rhodes died in 2004.
This
became a gay anthem. Like "YMCA" by The Village People, the gay
community helped popularize it.
Geri Halliwell, formerly a member of The Spice Girls, recorded this in 2001.
Her version was used on the soundtrack to the movieBridget Jones' Diary. When released, the
single shot straight to #1 for 2 weeks. This was Halliwell's fourth #1
single in a row, and it made her the British female artist with the most
#1 singles (11 in total, 7 with the Spice Girls and 4 of her own).
Halliwell's
version was her fifth single. Her new ultra-thin image in the video caused
a field day for the press, who came up with all sorts of ways she had
achieved this - some included her reported bulimia. (thanks, Thomas -

This
was written and produced by Paul Shaffer and Paul Jabara. Shaffer is David
Letterman's bandleader; Jabara wrote "Last Dance" and "No
More Tears" for Donna Summer.
Barbara
Streisand and Diana Ross were both offered this song and turned it down.
This was used on an episode of the TV showFriendswhen
Chandler and Monica went to Las Vegas to see Chandler's dad to tell him
they were getting married. Not long after they met him he sang this on
stage.
So let me know what you think, is this your favourite song and why?
How on this green green earth can I possibly pick a favorite song??
I have many choices but I'm not going to bore you with all of them so I went with....
Wonderwall - Oasis (or Ryan Adams)
I have no particular reason just have loved this song since I first bought "What's The Story, Morning Glory"
It's pure class by a definitely unclassy person. I finally saw Oasis live at Coke Fest in 2009 just before they disbanded. I was bitterly disappointed with their whole performance but when Wonderwall came on the whole world disappeared and all that was left was that song.
It’s a beautiful song and the Oasis version is a classic. Ryan Adams on the other hand took the exact same song and made it very different. He made it sad and I think that is why I fell in love with his version. I have said before that I love music for it’s lyrics but this is proof that the same lyrics can be changed with one simple melody.
Have a look at both videos and let me know what you think
·The general consensus is that this song is about Noel Gallagher's then girlfriend Meg Matthews, who is compared with a schoolboy's wall to which posters of footballers and Pop stars are attached. Noel later married then divorced Meg Matthews. However, according to Q magazines 1001 Best Songs Ever, this was not about Matthews. Noel is quoted as saying, "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. And how do you tell your Mrs. It’s not about her once she's read it is? It's about an imaginary friend who's going to come and save you from yourself."
·The music is based on Wonderwall Music, an instrumental album George Harrison wrote for the movie Wonderwall in 1968. This was the first solo album released by any of The Beatles.
·The concept of the "Wonderwall" is based on a '60s film called Wonderwall - from Psychedelia to Surrealism, starring Jane Birkin. She lives next door to a man who becomes fascinated with her,so he slowly makes holes in his wall so he can watch her through it. This is the "Wonderwall." Warning: this movie is supposedly terrible.
·In 2002, the British army produced a recruitment video that used this under footage of soldiers conducting exercises. The producers of the video didn't realize they needed permission to use the song, and when Oasis denied, they had to recall all the videos.
·The album is the second-best selling in British history. The best selling album in UK history is Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.
·This was the first single Oasis released in the US, and is their biggest hit in that country.
·Initially Noel wanted to sing this song, but he gave his brother Liam Gallagher the choice, and Noel ended up singing "Don't Look Back In Anger."
·What sounds like a cello was played on a Mellotron tape-playback keyboard, although the video features shows someone playing the cello.
·At live shows Noel plays his acoustic guitar on a Fender Telecaster. It's one of the few songs where he uses a Fender guitar rather than a Gibson.
·The opening track of (What's the Story) Morning Glory is the track "Hello," which starts off with the opening riff of "Wonderwall" playing extremely quietly; this stops once the guitar noise comes in.
·The original title was "Wishing Stone."
·In an interview conducted in Australia around the time of the release of Be Here Now, when asked which 3 songs he would like to be remembered for, Noel immediately responded with "Live Forever" and "Wonderwall" and then proceeded to list several others, including "Champagne Supernova," "Magic Pie" and "Cigarettes & Alcohol."
·At the very end of the song, the intro to "Supersonic" can be faintly heard being played on acoustic guitar.
·Radiohead recorded a bootleg cover of the song in which Thom Yorke sings many incorrect lyrics and cuts out mid-chorus when a background voice says, "Is this abysmal or what? It's always good to make fun of Oasis."
·Check out the sleeve artwork in the Song Images. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 8)
·This was prevented from reaching #1 in the UK by Robson & Jerome's Double A-side, "I Believe" and "Up on the Roof."
·The song's music promo won the Best Video at the 1996 Brit Awards.
I know I said it before but it really is a beautiful piece of music and in the right time and place can bring a tear to anybodies eyes.
My favorite song will more than likely change tomorrow, but for now....
I'm a big fan of mixed tapes! OK so you don't get mix tapes any more but CD's will do....
I started doing this last year but unfortunately stopped after two weeks. I haven't changed any of my choices from last year so I am sticking to those first choices.
So here is how it goes:
The general idea is to choose one song a day, for 30 days. This actually requires you to look 'within' and whilst some days are easier the other days do require you to use a whole day to decide.
Use the comment section below to post yours! I am linking each "day" to the blog post.
I was given a "boom box" on my 10th Birthday from my mom and my first cassette tape was "Kylie Minogue – Kylie" from my uncle on that very same day. A couple days later someone told me how to “tune in” to Radio 5 (now 5FM) and that was the end of that. Music was forever now linked to my soul.
I have soaked up and absorbed music like a sponge and even worked my first job out of High School in a record company. It is my place in life but one of two of my biggest passions.
I am highly passionate about many things but mainly music & food.
The two always mix for me as I couldn’t think of anything better than cooking whilst listening to a brand new CD that I have just discovered on iTunes or going to dinner at a new restaurant and discussing new artists, genre’s or CD’s. I must admit that I am probably boring people to death even as I type but I can't help it... All music makes me smile!
I get that most people are not as obsessive as me but I dare you to find me someone who doesn’t like some form of music whether it be Pop, Rock, Country, Classical, Jazz or Metal. Music is universal and generally the only thing most countries have in common in the Top 40 #1.
I’m a firm believer that music can save you and inevitably has some fantastic advice; you just have to listen carefully enough ;)
So now on to the reasoning behind this (and naturally I have a whole page dedicated to the reasoning)...
I have a slight problem with the knowledge of music that is out there and often get accused of being far too snobbish with my music. The truth is I will listen to absolutely anything once but if I don’t like it I will let you know (politely) and never listen to it again.
Then my other issue is people don’t look for any other music these days because it is just easier to listen to what everyone else listens to. Don’t get me wrong, I like “Moves Like Jagger” but not many people in South Africa had heard of Birdy or that it is a cover of a Grammy award winning band called Bon Iver? For people mad about the Top 40, does Grammy not equal airplay? For a country that adores Adele, I don’t really understand. Then to be fair again no radio stations played “Skinny Love” so how would they know? So why all the hidden music? What makes a band sell like Maroon 5 and what makes cult bands that are amazing sell only a 1000 CD's? Is good music bad for us? Or are we all brainwashed with bad music (or what I deem bad music) so people can make more money? And my final question; is my bad music your good music and vice versa?
So if you would allow me I would like to educate you slightly with my special brand of obsessiveness… Feel free to add your email to my "FOLLOW BY EMAIL" & please comment whenever! I need the education as well!
